How to Choose a Siding Contractor in Idaho (Without Getting Burned)

By Direct Siding ProsJanuary 29, 2025

Not all siding contractors are equal, and the wrong choice can void your warranty and cost you thousands. Here's exactly what to look for.

Siding installation has a low barrier to entry. Anyone with a truck and a nail gun can call themselves a siding contractor in Idaho. The result is a wide range of quality, and homeowners who choose the wrong contractor often discover it too late. Here's what to verify before signing any contract.

1. Verify Idaho contractor licensing

Idaho requires home improvement contractors to be licensed with the Idaho Contractors Board. A valid license means the contractor has passed a state exam, carries required insurance, and is subject to regulatory oversight. You can verify any contractor's license at the Idaho Division of Building Safety website. Washington homeowners should verify registration with the WA Department of Labor & Industries. Never hire an unlicensed contractor. If a worker is injured on your property or damage occurs, your homeowner's insurance may not cover it.

2. Confirm they carry full insurance

Any legitimate siding contractor should carry two types of insurance: general liability (covering accidental property damage) and workers' compensation (covering crew members if injured on your property). Ask for certificates of insurance before work begins. Any reputable contractor will provide these without hesitation. If a contractor is hesitant or says they're 'covered,' ask for the actual certificate.

3. Check their James Hardie certification level

If you're installing James Hardie products, which we strongly recommend for Idaho's climate, verify the contractor's certification level. James Hardie has three certification tiers: Contractor, Preferred, and Elite Preferred. Elite Preferred is the highest level, requiring factory training, verified installation quality, and customer satisfaction standards. Only Elite Preferred contractors can fully activate and register the 30-year substrate warranty and 15-year Color Plus warranty on your behalf. A non-certified contractor installing Hardie products risks voiding your warranty.

4. Read reviews carefully, not just the star rating

A 4.9-star rating with 20 reviews is far less reliable than a 4.8-star rating with 150 reviews. Read the actual text of reviews, looking for specifics: Did they clean up daily? Was the project completed on schedule? Did the final price match the estimate? Were there surprises during the project? How did the company handle problems when they arose? Pattern recognition across many reviews tells you far more than averages.

5. Get a detailed written estimate, not a ballpark

A professional estimate should specify: the exact product and Color Plus color, total square footage, linear footage of trim included, whether old siding removal and disposal is included, what happens if rot is discovered, permit requirements, payment schedule, and project timeline. Vague estimates that give a single lump sum without detail are a red flag. They're designed to allow scope changes later.

6. Ask about their installation process

The weather-resistant barrier (house wrap) and flashing details are where most siding failures originate, and most homeowners never see this work because it's covered by the time the siding goes on. Ask specifically: What house wrap do you use? How do you flash windows and doors? Will the sheathing be inspected before new siding goes over it? Contractors who can answer these questions in detail are doing the work right. Those who deflect or minimize these details probably aren't.

7. Red flags to watch for

  • Requires large upfront payment (more than 10–15% deposit is unusual)
  • No physical business address: only a PO box or no address at all
  • Unusually low bid that significantly undercuts all other estimates
  • Reluctance to provide license number, insurance certificates, or references
  • No written contract or estimate: only verbal agreements
  • High-pressure sales tactics or 'today only' pricing
  • Unfamiliar with James Hardie installation specifications
