James Hardie Color Plus Technology Explained

By Direct Siding ProsFebruary 5, 2025

Why is Color Plus so much better than field-painted siding? Here's exactly how the technology works and why it matters for Idaho homeowners.

If you've been researching James Hardie siding, you've seen the term 'Color Plus Technology' everywhere. But what exactly is it, and why does it matter? Here's a plain-language explanation of how Color Plus works and why it's a significant upgrade over field-painted siding.

What is Color Plus Technology?

Color Plus is James Hardie's factory-applied finish system. Instead of painting siding boards on a job site, where conditions vary and quality is inconsistent. Color Plus finish is applied and cured in a controlled factory environment using a multi-step process with industrial equipment. The result is a finish that's fundamentally different from anything achievable in the field.

How the factory process works

Each Color Plus panel goes through multiple stages at the factory: surface preparation and cleaning, primer application and curing, base coat application, and topcoat application, all followed by infrared curing at precisely controlled temperatures. The finish is baked into the surface rather than simply sitting on top of it. Edges are also factory-primed and sealed, which is a critical difference from field-painted siding where cut edges are often left exposed.

The 15-year color warranty

James Hardie backs Color Plus with a 15-year limited warranty against peeling, chipping, cracking, and excessive fade. This is the most comprehensive finish warranty in the siding industry, and it exists because the factory process produces a finish that's genuinely capable of lasting that long. Field-painted siding carries no manufacturer warranty on the paint, because field conditions are too variable to warrant it.

What 'no repainting for 15 years' means for you

The average cost to repaint a house in Idaho is $4,000–$8,000 for a standard-sized home. Over 15 years, most wood-sided or field-painted homes are repainted twice, a $8,000–$16,000 expense. With Color Plus, you eliminate that cost entirely for at least 15 years. When you factor this into the total cost comparison with vinyl (which also requires eventual repainting or replacement), the math often favors Color Plus fiber cement even on a straight cost basis.

Available colors in Idaho

Direct Siding Pros stocks 15 Color Plus colors locally in Idaho for faster project timelines. Colors range from classic neutrals like Arctic White and Cobblestone to bold statement options like Evening Blue and Iron Gray. During your free estimate, we bring physical Color Plus samples to your home so you can evaluate colors in your actual lighting conditions before committing. Digital representations never fully capture how a color will look on your home.

Does Color Plus require special maintenance?

No. Color Plus maintenance is minimal. An annual rinse with a garden hose is generally all that's needed to keep panels looking their best. Avoid pressure washing directly at panel joints. If a panel is physically damaged (from a severe impact, for example), James Hardie makes touch-up paint matched to each Color Plus color, available through your installer.
